A Desert Cow Boy in Sharjah

In a land where your eyes feast on sand dunes and extensive desert sands, one cannot imagine the existence of a western cowboy. Yet the same is true in Sharjah, one of the seven Emirates of the UAE. For the Sharjah residents he is a well know person. Come rain, mist, winter or merciless sunshine, the ever familiar figure of a man with military trousers, a heavy coat over a layer of a shirt and a sweater , a cap on his balding head and his little personal belongings in a discarded supermarket trolley is true of the DESERT COWBOY. He resembles Charlie Chaplin playing the Tramp. Nobody actually knows his real name. But to the residents, he is simply known as COWBOY. Given a first glance, one can brush him off as a rare vagabond in the UAE. But he has the distinction of assisting the Sharjah Police in directing traffic during peak hours, helps in as day-time security for selective buildings and also teaches little children Arabic. read more.

DIC set for SmartCity talks

A delegation from Dubai Internet City is to meet with officials in Kerala in a bid to revive the SmartCity project in Kochi, which was stalled by the new state government, reported Gulf News. The DIC is currently in discussions with other Indian cities about setting up similar business parks. . read more.

Viola brewing up desert storm

THE irony of a boy from Easterhouse conducting high-stakes global business from his luxury apartment in the Dubai Marina has not escaped John Viola. One of Scotland's busiest football representatives may have left his Bothwell base behind two years ago but reports of his professional demise have been greatly exaggerated. Barry Ferguson's long-serving agent and close friend opted for a drastic lifestyle change as the harsh financial reality of Scottish football finally bit. Yet far from indulging in the opulence of the millionaires' playground of the Middle East, Viola has never been busier. As well as operating a burgeoning property business in tandem with Derek Whyte, Viola is also a driving force behind the country's football boom. Once a salubrious retirement home for the likes of Gabriel Batistuta and Ronald De Boer, the Dubai soccer league has recently turned professional and, therefore, more discerning in its import policy. read more.

Location matters

Spa and leisure facilities at Fujairahs first five-star beach resort, Le Meridien Al Aqah, are preparing for expansion, following three successful years of operation, according to Talar Hagopian, spa manager at the resort. The resort, which first opened in 2003, has set the benchmark for hotel operations in the emirate, and is soon to be joined by Rotana and Japanese hotel group JAL Hotels, which is set to open the Nikko Fujairah in December, as the Fujairah coastline becomes a favourite weekend and day destination for those living in the UAE. As local weekend and day visitor numbers continue to grow year on year, Hagopian is preparing to extend her spa facilities with the opening of more treatment rooms and is now busy promoting the resorts day spa offering. My new challenge is to market our day spa, or what we refer to now as Al Aqah Journeys, to the residents of Dubai and neighbouring emirates. read more.

Demand for national employees increasing

Dubai: Demand for a UAE national workforce is on the rise in the private sector as companies seek to adhere to the Ministry of Labour's emiratisation strategy, said a senior ministry official. The National Human Resources and Employment Authority (Tanmia) has registered a dramatic increase in the number of private companies advertising positions for nationals following the new emiratisation policies, said Dr Khalid Al Khazraji, Labour undersecretary and Acting Director-General of Tanmia. They have doubled in number in the last three months rising from 150 available positions to 300 per week according to Tanmia statistics. "The rise in the demand for a UAE national workforce is to be attributed to the new emiratisation scheme enforced by the ministry, such as stopping the transactions of companies that do not meet their emiratisation quota and the emiratisation of professions," said Al Khazraji. read more.

When every coin counts

The phones may have stopped ringing for the 'Towards Healing Lebanon's Wounds' telethon, but the money keeps coming in, as the crisis in Lebanon elicits a massive response from the UAE. Dh54 million was raised for the cause in just ten hours. Throughout the UAE, the public continues to be outraged by the rising death toll and acts of brutality, such as the Qana massacre. An estimated 900,000 people or one fifth of Lebanon's population have been displaced, translating into a wide-scale humanitarian crisis. While some wring their hands in despair over a situation that continues to deteriorate, vast numbers of UAE residents are opting instead to actually do something. With the crisis so close to home, the UAE's contribution to the humanitarian appeal has been described as "phenomenal". read more. The net has tons of advice on top subjects and all of it is accessible by merely studying all available.
