Over 90 per cent got jobs under rural employment scheme

New Delhi: More than 90 per cent of job applicants have been given employment under the national rural employment guarantee act, the Rajya Sabha was informed today."Out of 7,328,551 persons who have demanded employment (under the NREGA), 6,886,729 have been provided, which is 93.97 per cent," Minister of State for Rural Development Suryakanta Patil said in a reply.The Minister, however, admitted that a range of factors, such as state elections and shortage of staff and training, did slow down the progress of the rural employment programme in certain areas initially.But progress considerably improved after separate funds came in provide training for the programme, she said."Besides, instructions have been issued by the Central government from time to time for effective implementation of the act by the states." Sanitation: The Delhi government has made no request to the Centre to be part of its total sanitation campaign (TSC), Minister of State for Rural Development A Narendra said in a reply.The campaign is, however, under implementation in 559 rural districts across the country, he said."All the remaining districts in the country will be covered during the eleventh plan." Jharkhand Roads: The Jharkhand government has spent Rs 64.78 crore out of Rs 170 crore of the Central allocation in 2005-06 under the Pradhan mantri Gram Sadak Yojna, the Rajya Sabha was informed.In 2004-05, it spent Rs 95.08 crore out of Rs 110 crore on rural road-laying under the scheme, Patil said. read more.

DIFX and Bahrain Stock Exchange sign Memorandum of Understanding

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today between Bahrain Stock Exchange (BSE) and Dubai International Financial Exchange (DIFX) to develop and strengthen capital markets activity in the region. The MoU was signed by Fouad Rashid, BSE's Director, and Nasser Alshaali, Chief Operating Officer of the DIFX. The MoU aims at strengthening and increasing cooperation between both parties in areas relating to exchange of expertise and information by both parties. The MoU will work on increasing awareness among both parties market participants regarding the legal framework and investment opportunities available in both bourses. It also encourages listed companies in both stock markets to cross list their securities. The MoU encourages both parties to jointly organize training programs and enhances relations and cooperation between market participants operating on both stock exchanges Mr. read more.



Standard Chartered legal chief in move to Dubai

Standard Chartered group head of legal David Brimacombe is jetting off to Dubai to take up a new position at the bank, leaving the organisation to search for a successor in London. Brimacombe is moving to the Gulf in the next few months to help drive forward the bank's operations in the region. The bank has not yet made a decision on his replacement in London. Meanwhile,Standard Chartered has hired its first-ever employment specialist. Rebecca Priestley will join the bank's London legal team from Simmons & Simmons in August. She will be looking after employment issues across all of the bank's 56 locations. Brimacombe said: "This is very much a global role. Rebecca will be working with the legal team and the HR team on employment issues across all our offices." The move comes as banks look to beef up their in-house employment capabilities in the wake of increased litigation for unfair dismissal or sexual discrimination. read more.

Nepalis stranded in Dubai

A Nepali social worker in Dubai, Shyam Sharma, informed Nepalnews that the brokers brought them to Dubai after taking Rs. 150,000 per person giving assurance of good jobs in Iraq. The brokers had assured them to take them to Iraq via Dubai. The brokers fled after keeping Nepali workers in Rasalakhai city of Dubai. Of the stranded workers, five Nepalis, who were languishing in the city, said they did not even have proper arrangements for food. Stating that the number of Nepali people being cheated is increasing every day, Sharma advised the government to correspond to the concerned embassies not to issue visit visas to Nepalis and if anybody wants to go to the Arab countries, they should not be allowed to go there without having US dollars 1,000.
