Home boys fly the flag as Redoute's Choice races away with first premiership

THE 2005-06 season, which ended on Monday, proved what a great line-up of colonially bred stallions Australasia has to offer, with seven home-breds among the top 10 sires and magnificent results for several exciting freshman sires. Redoute's Choice has been the benchmark stallion, winning his first champion sire of Australasia title, with a $1.8 million margin, as well as being the leading sire of two-year-olds for the season. He led for most of the past four months and never looked like being headed, with Encosta De Lago filling the quinella. Encosta De Lago supplied more winners than any other stallion with 128 individual winners of 227 races. New Zealand-based Zabeel finished third in the overall stallions' lists ahead of Makybe Diva's sire Desert King, which no longer shuttles overseas. read more.

Viola brewing up desert storm

THE irony of a boy from Easterhouse conducting high-stakes global business from his luxury apartment in the Dubai Marina has not escaped John Viola. One of Scotland's busiest football representatives may have left his Bothwell base behind two years ago but reports of his professional demise have been greatly exaggerated. Barry Ferguson's long-serving agent and close friend opted for a drastic lifestyle change as the harsh financial reality of Scottish football finally bit. Yet far from indulging in the opulence of the millionaires' playground of the Middle East, Viola has never been busier. As well as operating a burgeoning property business in tandem with Derek Whyte, Viola is also a driving force behind the country's football boom. Once a salubrious retirement home for the likes of Gabriel Batistuta and Ronald De Boer, the Dubai soccer league has recently turned professional and, therefore, more discerning in its import policy. read more.

He has promises to keep,And Miles To Go Before He Can Sleep

Mahmoud Mohieldin is one of those people you either love or hate there's no gray zone, no safe middle ground. As the brashest and most outspoken of the Nazif Cabinet's Economic Team, where he joins Minister of Trade and Industry Rachid Mohamed Rachid and veteran Minister of Finance and Insurance Youssef Boutros-Ghali, Mohieldin has been working overtime since July 2004 to kick-start the nation's ailing economy. Two years into the job, he is routinely lauded in international circles for both his vision and the bluntness with which he implements it. It's gotten to the point where he seems almost invariably described in the foreign press as "Egypt's tough-minded investment minister." Those same attributes have won him little other than attacks here at home, particularly in the local press, and he knows it: Mohieldin has no illusions about his popularity with the majority of Egyptians who are staunchly opposed to his fast-track privatization program, but he says he's determined to remain focused on "ensuring the Egyptian people their right to a better future." Two years on, the statistics are promising and the programs are working, but the Economic Team still lacks credibility on the street. read more.

South Africa: Bags Full of Possibilities for Job Creation

JOB creation is often seen as requiring big projects, massive capital outlay or state intervention. Business and government overlook opportunities in the so-called second economy. Instead of pouring money into job creation, why not support and expand existing markets created by the entrepreneurial instincts of poor people? An excellent example of this is the Johannesburg cross-border retail trade sector, where more than half a million people are coming into the city each year to shop, bringing in between R15bn and R20bn a year. Figures from South African Tourism indicate that one third, or R15,7bn, of the total spend by domestic and international tourists in SA in 2004 was in Johannesburg. Of this, R5,7bn, or more than one-third, was from regional shoppers travelling overland to SA. read more.

Kerala CM express hope on Smart City project

An agreement with Dubai Internet City (DIC) for setting up the controversial 'Smart City' project in Kochi could be finalised within a month, state Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan said. "Both sides are hopeful that an agreement could be possible in a month," Achuthanandan told reporters here after holding talks with the DIC representatives here. Asked whether the project would be on joint venture basis as suggested by the previous UDF government, Achuthanandan said options were open in this regard. "DIC could implement the project on their own," he added. Talks with DIC were similar to the ones the government was holding with other major IT companies, he said, adding many IT majors have shown interest in setting up their arms in Kochi, considering the strategic importance of the city. read more.
