TCS, Wipro keen to acquire land at Infopark: Kerala CM

Kochi, Aug 5. (PTI): IT majors Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro have evinced interest in acquiring land for setting up campuses at Infopark at nearby Kakkanad, Chief Minister V S Achutanandan said on Friday. The Chief Minister, who visited the Infopark on Friday morning and spent about 20 minutes talking to officials, later told reporters that about 25,000 people would get employment by 2008 when the development of the park would be more or less completed. Infopark would not be a subject of discussion during the talks being held on Friday and Saturday at Thiruvananthapuram with the officials of Dubai Internet City (DIC) in connection with the setting up of the Kochi Smart city project, he said. The Chief Minister said land acquisition proceedings with regard to 136 acres of land for developing Infopark would be speeded up. read more.

South Africa: Bags Full of Possibilities for Job Creation

JOB creation is often seen as requiring big projects, massive capital outlay or state intervention. Business and government overlook opportunities in the so-called second economy. Instead of pouring money into job creation, why not support and expand existing markets created by the entrepreneurial instincts of poor people? An excellent example of this is the Johannesburg cross-border retail trade sector, where more than half a million people are coming into the city each year to shop, bringing in between R15bn and R20bn a year. Figures from South African Tourism indicate that one third, or R15,7bn, of the total spend by domestic and international tourists in SA in 2004 was in Johannesburg. Of this, R5,7bn, or more than one-third, was from regional shoppers travelling overland to SA. read more.

When every coin counts

The phones may have stopped ringing for the 'Towards Healing Lebanon's Wounds' telethon, but the money keeps coming in, as the crisis in Lebanon elicits a massive response from the UAE. Dh54 million was raised for the cause in just ten hours. Throughout the UAE, the public continues to be outraged by the rising death toll and acts of brutality, such as the Qana massacre. An estimated 900,000 people or one fifth of Lebanon's population have been displaced, translating into a wide-scale humanitarian crisis. While some wring their hands in despair over a situation that continues to deteriorate, vast numbers of UAE residents are opting instead to actually do something. With the crisis so close to home, the UAE's contribution to the humanitarian appeal has been described as "phenomenal". read more.

Racing: Eden Rock will be hard to beat in Mile feature

A top mile handicapper can be a jewel in any stable, as is illustrated by the latest of the many big-money races over this trip available to horses of this calibre, the totesport Mile at Goodwood. The winner will earn 93,480 but will have had to work hard for the money. Winning one of these races is difficult enough, but winning two or more is very demanding, yet there is plenty of money being wagered that Sir Gerard and Dunelight, having won big handicaps, will do it again. Sir Gerard lifted the Brittania Stakes at Royal Ascot, beating Free Air, who was receiving 1lb, by two lengths. Dunelight took the London Clubs International at Ascot last month, also beating Free Air, who was receiving 1lb, by five lengths. Logic has it, then, that if one of these two is to make it a double, Dunelight should be the one. read more.

Finding fun in Islamic world

"How do you know you're a Muslim?" the Egyptian American comedian asked, recalling one bit that worked in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. "When you drink, gamble and have sex -- but don't eat pork." Ba-da-boom. "People there laugh at the same things we do," Ahmed said, ticking off a list that included dating, religion, airport security and getting into nightclubs. Not to mention George W. Bush. Comedy does indeed exist in the Muslim world. But, as suggested by Albert Brooks' recent film "Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World," stand-up is still a rarity in Muslim countries. Films, sitcoms and talk shows have been making Muslims laugh for decades. Newspapers, magazines and theater troupes dish out political satire and poke fun at celebrities and the wealthy. read more.
