Spirit of Norway take the field as strong favourites

Dubai: Spirit of Norway go in as strong favourites in the Honda British Grand Prix the fifth round of the UIM Class One World Powerboat Championship in Plymouth this week. Though Spirit of Norway lead the title race by 17 points, they have not had it going their way this season. And when the defending World Champions line up in Plymouth tomorrow, they will be wary of the threat that the list of would-be challengers is growing after each race this season. Midway through the 2006 season, with four races run, the championship is developing into one of the most unpredictable and compelling for many years. Five boats have taken either pole position and/or race wins so far. Spirit of Norway and King of Shaves, running the Lamborghini-Skema V12 and Foresti&Suardi-Roscioli Hotels with the Lamborghini-Scam V12 have set the pace in qualifying to grab pole position and Spirit, with Qatar 95 and Jotun, both running the Mercury Class 1 V8, taking race wins. read more.

South Africa: Bags Full of Possibilities for Job Creation

JOB creation is often seen as requiring big projects, massive capital outlay or state intervention. Business and government overlook opportunities in the so-called second economy. Instead of pouring money into job creation, why not support and expand existing markets created by the entrepreneurial instincts of poor people? An excellent example of this is the Johannesburg cross-border retail trade sector, where more than half a million people are coming into the city each year to shop, bringing in between R15bn and R20bn a year. Figures from South African Tourism indicate that one third, or R15,7bn, of the total spend by domestic and international tourists in SA in 2004 was in Johannesburg. Of this, R5,7bn, or more than one-third, was from regional shoppers travelling overland to SA. read more.

A Desert Cow Boy in Sharjah

In a land where your eyes feast on sand dunes and extensive desert sands, one cannot imagine the existence of a western cowboy. Yet the same is true in Sharjah, one of the seven Emirates of the UAE. For the Sharjah residents he is a well know person. Come rain, mist, winter or merciless sunshine, the ever familiar figure of a man with military trousers, a heavy coat over a layer of a shirt and a sweater , a cap on his balding head and his little personal belongings in a discarded supermarket trolley is true of the DESERT COWBOY. He resembles Charlie Chaplin playing the Tramp. Nobody actually knows his real name. But to the residents, he is simply known as COWBOY. Given a first glance, one can brush him off as a rare vagabond in the UAE. But he has the distinction of assisting the Sharjah Police in directing traffic during peak hours, helps in as day-time security for selective buildings and also teaches little children Arabic. read more.

Palm Atlantis rises up from the sand

Located on the furthermost point of the busiest construction site in Dubai, the logistics of building the Atlantis on the Palm Jumeirah were never going to be easy. Throw in a midday working ban, an international shortage of tower cranes, the problem of accommodating 2,000 site workers, and the fact that your entire development will be built on sand, and you really have all the ingredients of what is known in the industry as a logistical nightmare. But despite the myriad obstacles threatening the smooth progress of the US $1.5 billion (AED5.5 billion) project, it remains on track for a December 2008 opening. Perhaps the key reason for this has been the unusual approach adopted by developer, Kerzner International. And that started with the decision to avoid letting the work to a main contractor in the traditional way. read more.

Demand for national employees increasing

Dubai: Demand for a UAE national workforce is on the rise in the private sector as companies seek to adhere to the Ministry of Labour's emiratisation strategy, said a senior ministry official. The National Human Resources and Employment Authority (Tanmia) has registered a dramatic increase in the number of private companies advertising positions for nationals following the new emiratisation policies, said Dr Khalid Al Khazraji, Labour undersecretary and Acting Director-General of Tanmia. They have doubled in number in the last three months rising from 150 available positions to 300 per week according to Tanmia statistics. "The rise in the demand for a UAE national workforce is to be attributed to the new emiratisation scheme enforced by the ministry, such as stopping the transactions of companies that do not meet their emiratisation quota and the emiratisation of professions," said Al Khazraji. read more.

Dubai: The survivors of Sunday's labour-camp fire in Bahrain, in which 17 Indian workers lost their lives and nine were injured, have decided to file a class action civil suit against their employer, the Royal Tower Construction Company.
