Grand Hyatt Dubai

I drove up to one of Dubai's newest luxury hotels, the Grand Hyatt Dubai, with it's towers majestically standing watch over the edge of the emirate's historic creek. The hotel is a combination of resort facilities, luxury hotel guest rooms and suites, residential apartments and I'm told, one of the most advanced conference centres in the Middle East, all set within a lush oasis of 37 acres of landscaped gardens. The hotel claims it offers a first for a Dubai hotel - the concept of a city resort which includes first-class recreational facilities such as a Zen-inspired Grand Spa, tennis centre, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and jogging track set, and yet the hotel is situated close to the city centre, and just minutes from Dubai International Airport. The property has 674 hotel guest rooms and suites, luxuriously appointed and classically-styled, each providing ultra-modern digital technology and communications. read more.

Gulf Navigation Holding signs Dh145m ship deal

Dubai: Gulf Navigation Holding (GNH), the region's rapidly growing oil and chemical carrier, and ST Shipping and Trading have signed a charter agreement for three ships at an approximate value of $40 million (Dh145 million). ST Shipping and Trading is the shipping arm of Switzerland-based Glencore, one of the largest oil trading houses in the world. Under the terms of the agreement, GNH will time-charter two ships to ST Shipping and Trading for up to two years under long-term fixed rate employment, and a third at a floating market rate with a fixed minimum charter rate. Standard Chartered legal chief in move to Dubai

Standard Chartered group head of legal David Brimacombe is jetting off to Dubai to take up a new position at the bank, leaving the organisation to search for a successor in London. Brimacombe is moving to the Gulf in the next few months to help drive forward the bank's operations in the region. The bank has not yet made a decision on his replacement in London. Meanwhile,Standard Chartered has hired its first-ever employment specialist. Rebecca Priestley will join the bank's London legal team from Simmons & Simmons in August. She will be looking after employment issues across all of the bank's 56 locations. Brimacombe said: "This is very much a global role. Rebecca will be working with the legal team and the HR team on employment issues across all our offices." The move comes as banks look to beef up their in-house employment capabilities in the wake of increased litigation for unfair dismissal or sexual discrimination. read more.

Indian MP calls for Bahrain-India shipping service

Dubai - An Indian MP from Kerala has called for the resumption of a shipping service between Bahrain and India for the benefit of low-paid Indian workers in that Gulf country. Pannyan Ravindran of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has said that he will submit a petition signed by 20 MPs from Kerala to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking resumption of the services, according to a report in the Gulf Daily News newspaper. Ravindran, according to the report, has said that the shipping services were necessary as the present airfares between India and Bahrain are almost the same as those on the India-Europe sector, which the low-paid workers cannot afford. Though a passenger ferry service was launched between the Gulf and India in 2001 by a Bahraini firm, it had to be subsequently cancelled as the vessel could not get a sea-worthiness certificate from India's Mercantile and Marine Department. read more.

Going green: Zero emission across different industries

Concern for environmental damage caused by industries' pollution has reached fever pitch globally. Proactive waste management systems practiced today are still in the "end-of-the-pipe" phase. They need to move beyond recycling to work at minimizing waste generation. This can be done by revisiting the entire production processes of different industries. Worldwide, companies are waking up to the fact that the only sustainable path to the future is the observance of the zero emissions doctrine. As a new paradigm, zero waste has to be embraced with a near religious zeal that goes beyond recycling waste. At the basic level, it would mean that the manufacturer takes back some part of the product for reuse. The significant barriers to zero-waste drive are evident. If there was resistance to setting up effluent treatment plants in the early 1990s, radical shifts in today's production process are bound to face stronger resistance. read more.

Jackie O's estate benefits from local artist

It was around two oclock in the morning. Missouri Southern State University alumnus T. Crowe (Terry) Semler was having problems with the thesis he was writing for his master's degree at the University of Arkansas. Earlier in the day he had heard one student say to another "If you google yourself and don't find anything, you're really nothing." TERRY SEMLER He thought about the comment for a moment. Then he went back to work on the thesis and typed on, but, after awhile, he knew he needed a break. Normally, he would have worked on one of his many paintings or other art projects to clear his head. But this time, for the first time in his life, he went online and typed his own name in the Google Internet search engine. "I hit enter," he says," and immediately up pops an article saying that Sotheby's has had a sale of the estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and it has brought in over $5 million dollars." He scrolled down and came across this paragraph from the New York Times: "Mary Lou Boone of San Marino, Calif., was in New York visiting with her daughter and felt impelled to have something from the historic era to pass along. read more.Circumvent killing resources struggling to instruct yourself.
