Overseers will put the brakes on illegal taxis

HATS off to the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) for its initiative to engage 30 retired UAE citizens as overseers to report and catch people found using their private cars as taxis. The new officials have all served in the army or the police and are particularly familiar with the job. They would be eligible for a monthly remuneration of Dh1,000 in addition to 5 per cent of the value of fines they collect from offenders, provided that the total collected charges do not exceed Dh9,000 a month. The initiative will not only protect and safeguard the rights of cabbies affiliated to the RTA but create jobs for retired nationals who feel they have more years of service left in them. Drivers who employ their own cars or leased vehicles to shuttle passengers will either dwindle in number or just vanish. read more.

Demand for national employees increasing

Dubai: Demand for a UAE national workforce is on the rise in the private sector as companies seek to adhere to the Ministry of Labour's emiratisation strategy, said a senior ministry official. The National Human Resources and Employment Authority (Tanmia) has registered a dramatic increase in the number of private companies advertising positions for nationals following the new emiratisation policies, said Dr Khalid Al Khazraji, Labour undersecretary and Acting Director-General of Tanmia. They have doubled in number in the last three months rising from 150 available positions to 300 per week according to Tanmia statistics. "The rise in the demand for a UAE national workforce is to be attributed to the new emiratisation scheme enforced by the ministry, such as stopping the transactions of companies that do not meet their emiratisation quota and the emiratisation of professions," said Al Khazraji. read more.

It's Academic

The dominant political culture on Australian university campuses brings to mind a scene from the classic movie Casablanca. A naïve young woman approaches the nightclub owner Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) to enquire about the character of the thoroughly dissolute French police captain played by Claude Raines. "HeÂ’s like any other man, only more so," quips the jaded Bogart in response. . read more.

The survivors have refused to go back to work unless the company improves their living conditions, according to a report in the Gulf Daily News newspaper. The case would be in addition to criminal charges that are expected to be pressed against the company, the report quoted Indias Ambassador to Bahrain Balkrishna Shetty as saying. The workers case could lead to payout of hundreds of thousands of Bahraini dinars by the company to the workers, he said. Investigations are now under way by the public prosecutor to ascertain whether there was criminal intent and charges are expected to be filed in a few days, Shetty told a press conference. read more.

"The surest way to get called a racist in Seattle," said my friend and sage colleague, Melanie McFarland, "is to point out race." I did, and so I was. A few readers took issue with my description of the target market for the McMansions on Seattle's Street of Dreams in last week's column: the Whitey McWhitersons, aka Wasps. This was based on the many family portraits, the marketing equivalent of "Your Family Here" signs, scattered throughout the homes. . read more.Resist wasting away time struggling to inform yourself.
