Bahrain Blaze Survivors to Sue Construction FirmBahrain, Aug 5: The survivors of Sundays labour-camp fire in Bahrain, in which 17 Indian workers lost their lives and nine were injured, have decided to file a class action civil suit against their employer, the Royal Tower Construction Company. The survivors have refused to go back to work unless the company improves their living conditions, according to a report in the Gulf Daily News newspaper. The case would be in addition to criminal charges that are expected to be pressed against the company, the report quoted Indias Ambassador to Bahrain Balkrishna Shetty as saying. The workers case could lead to payout of hundreds of thousands of Bahraini dinars by the company to the workers, he said. Investigations are now under way by the public prosecutor to ascertain whether there was criminal intent and charges are expected to be filed in a few days, Shetty told a press conference. read more. Though Spirit of Norway lead the title race by 17 points, they have not had it going their way this season. Midway through the 2006 season, with four races run, the championship is developing into one of the most unpredictable and compelling for many years. Five boats have taken either pole position and/or race wins so far. Spirit of Norway and King of Shaves, running the Lamborghini-Skema V12 and Foresti&Suardi-Roscioli Hotels with the Lamborghini-Scam V12 have set the pace in qualifying to grab pole position and Spirit, with Qatar 95 and Jotun, both running the Mercury Class 1 V8, taking race wins. read more. Finding fun in Islamic world"How do you know you're a Muslim?" the Egyptian American comedian asked, recalling one bit that worked in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. "When you drink, gamble and have sex -- but don't eat pork." Ba-da-boom. "People there laugh at the same things we do," Ahmed said, ticking off a list that included dating, religion, airport security and getting into nightclubs. Not to mention George W. Bush. Comedy does indeed exist in the Muslim world. But, as suggested by Albert Brooks' recent film "Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World," stand-up is still a rarity in Muslim countries. Films, sitcoms and talk shows have been making Muslims laugh for decades. Newspapers, magazines and theater troupes dish out political satire and poke fun at celebrities and the wealthy. read more. Demand for national employees increasingDubai: Demand for a UAE national workforce is on the rise in the private sector as companies seek to adhere to the Ministry of Labour's emiratisation strategy, said a senior ministry official. The National Human Resources and Employment Authority (Tanmia) has registered a dramatic increase in the number of private companies advertising positions for nationals following the new emiratisation policies, said Dr Khalid Al Khazraji, Labour undersecretary and Acting Director-General of Tanmia. They have doubled in number in the last three months rising from 150 available positions to 300 per week according to Tanmia statistics. "The rise in the demand for a UAE national workforce is to be attributed to the new emiratisation scheme enforced by the ministry, such as stopping the transactions of companies that do not meet their emiratisation quota and the emiratisation of professions," said Al Khazraji. read more.
