Expat secretaries to be allowed new positionsDubai: Expatriate secretaries will be able to continue working for their employers as long as the title and nature of their positions are adjusted, said a senior labour official. Dr Khalid Al Khazraji, Undersecretary of Labour, said that although secretarial positions were to be emiratised, employers were being given the option to keep their former expatriate secretaries as long as they were given alternative positions. "There is a need for flexibility in implementing the rules. The idea is to encourage companies to employ UAE nationals," he said. However, he added that secretarial positions were exclusively reserved for UAE nationals. A ministerial decision which came into effect on June 24 requires all secretarial positions to be emiratised. read more. Going green: Zero emission across different industriesConcern for environmental damage caused by industries' pollution has reached fever pitch globally. Proactive waste management systems practiced today are still in the "end-of-the-pipe" phase. They need to move beyond recycling to work at minimizing waste generation. This can be done by revisiting the entire production processes of different industries. Worldwide, companies are waking up to the fact that the only sustainable path to the future is the observance of the zero emissions doctrine. As a new paradigm, zero waste has to be embraced with a near religious zeal that goes beyond recycling waste. At the basic level, it would mean that the manufacturer takes back some part of the product for reuse. The significant barriers to zero-waste drive are evident. If there was resistance to setting up effluent treatment plants in the early 1990s, radical shifts in today's production process are bound to face stronger resistance. read more. Will Saudis Emulate Dubai's Development Bonanza? The grass is always greener on the other side. Saudi visitors and businessmen returning from Dubai seem to come back ever more impressed by the phenomenal growth and development taking place in that UAE emirate. They long for the day when the Kingdom emulates Dubai's apparent success. A major question, however, does Saudi Arabia really want to be another Dubai? Underneath the glitter and the sophisticated marketing and PR, glitches and cracks are beginning to appear in Dubai's so-called miracle development bonanza. It behooves Saudi Arabia to sit back and take note. Societies need to balance their economic development with transformation that takes into account internal social cohesiveness and responsibilities for the wider community. While Dubai has undoubtedly provided its native citizens with the trappings of a comfortable welfare state, a luxury lifestyle and seeming guaranteed employment, the desire and obsession to be the number one in many areas has also created social stress and uncertainty about core family traditions and values. read more.
