He has promises to keep,And Miles To Go Before He Can Sleep

Mahmoud Mohieldin is one of those people you either love or hate there's no gray zone, no safe middle ground. As the brashest and most outspoken of the Nazif Cabinet's Economic Team, where he joins Minister of Trade and Industry Rachid Mohamed Rachid and veteran Minister of Finance and Insurance Youssef Boutros-Ghali, Mohieldin has been working overtime since July 2004 to kick-start the nation's ailing economy. Two years into the job, he is routinely lauded in international circles for both his vision and the bluntness with which he implements it. It's gotten to the point where he seems almost invariably described in the foreign press as "Egypt's tough-minded investment minister." Those same attributes have won him little other than attacks here at home, particularly in the local press, and he knows it: Mohieldin has no illusions about his popularity with the majority of Egyptians who are staunchly opposed to his fast-track privatization program, but he says he's determined to remain focused on "ensuring the Egyptian people their right to a better future." Two years on, the statistics are promising and the programs are working, but the Economic Team still lacks credibility on the street. read more.

Demand for national employees increasing

Dubai: Demand for a UAE national workforce is on the rise in the private sector as companies seek to adhere to the Ministry of Labour's emiratisation strategy, said a senior ministry official. The National Human Resources and Employment Authority (Tanmia) has registered a dramatic increase in the number of private companies advertising positions for nationals following the new emiratisation policies, said Dr Khalid Al Khazraji, Labour undersecretary and Acting Director-General of Tanmia. They have doubled in number in the last three months rising from 150 available positions to 300 per week according to Tanmia statistics. "The rise in the demand for a UAE national workforce is to be attributed to the new emiratisation scheme enforced by the ministry, such as stopping the transactions of companies that do not meet their emiratisation quota and the emiratisation of professions," said Al Khazraji. read more.

Meanwhile,Standard Chartered has hired its first-ever employment specialist. Rebecca Priestley will join the bank's London legal team from Simmons & Simmons in August. She will be looking after employment issues across all of the bank's 56 locations. Brimacombe said: "This is very much a global role. Rebecca will be working with the legal team and the HR team on employment issues across all our offices." The move comes as banks look to beef up their in-house employment capabilities in the wake of increased litigation for unfair dismissal or sexual discrimination. read more.

Bahrain blaze survivors to sue firm

Dubai: The survivors of Sunday's labour-camp fire in Bahrain, in which 17 Indian workers lost their lives and nine were injured, have decided to file a class action civil suit against their employer, the Royal Tower Construction Company. The survivors have refused to go back to work unless the company improves their living conditions, according to a report in the Gulf Daily News newspaper. The case would be in addition to criminal charges that are expected to be pressed against the company, the report quoted India's Ambassador to Bahrain Balkrishna Shetty as saying. The workers' case could lead to payout of hundreds of thousands of Bahraini dinars by the company to the workers, he said."Investigations are now under way by the public prosecutor to ascertain whether there was criminal intent and charges are expected to be filed in a few days," Shetty told a press conference. read more.

Officials' waffling may put brakes on monorail

The future of Jakarta's planned monorail remains fraught with confusion as the project's principle actors, as well as state officials, persistently contradict each other on the question of financial guarantees to secure overseas loans. Vice President Jusuf Kalla said Friday that the central government is willing to provide the guarantees for project developer PT Jakarta Monorail (JM) so it can secure overseas loans. However, this can only be done if the Jakarta administration finalizes its contract with JM. "We are willing to issue the guarantee. But the Jakarta administration should ensure with JM that the minimum requirements for the project have been met," said Kalla without elaborating. He reiterated that it was the task of the city administration, not the central government, to guarantee the project. read more.

Racing: Eden Rock will be hard to beat in Mile feature

A top mile handicapper can be a jewel in any stable, as is illustrated by the latest of the many big-money races over this trip available to horses of this calibre, the totesport Mile at Goodwood. The winner will earn 93,480 but will have had to work hard for the money. Winning one of these races is difficult enough, but winning two or more is very demanding, yet there is plenty of money being wagered that Sir Gerard and Dunelight, having won big handicaps, will do it again. Sir Gerard lifted the Brittania Stakes at Royal Ascot, beating Free Air, who was receiving 1lb, by two lengths. Dunelight took the London Clubs International at Ascot last month, also beating Free Air, who was receiving 1lb, by five lengths. Logic has it, then, that if one of these two is to make it a double, Dunelight should be the one. read more.
